A critical understanding of contemporary society through the prism of the structures, institutions, principles and ideologies that underpin it are desirable attribute for an individual to possess in a world of ever greater interconnectedness and globalisation. Politics at The Quest Academy aims to equip students with the skills and knowledge to confront this reality head on.

We shall create students who can:

  • Understand and appreciate the ideological foundations that underpin contemporary society.
  • Make comparative, evaluative judgements on the nature and institutions of the state.
  • Understand the interaction of ideas throughout history to understand the problems faced by society today.
  • Debate and construct arguments that are well formed, and critically reflective, not dependent upon ad hominem or straw-man reasoning.
  • Write evaluatively, being able to create relevant criteria to analyse and evaluate topical debates, reaching informed judgements predicated on critical engagement with knowledge about institutions, ideas and theorists.
  • Be critical and analytical of documents and the media in order to assess and understand effectively, with a clear appreciation of political bias.
  • Be politically engaged, and understand current political apathy and other forms of political participation.
  • Have a passion and enjoyment of the opportunities brought about through the study of Politics.

This will be achieved through the delivery of a diverse and varied curriculum, that:

  • Has appropriate depth, alongside relevant stretch to lay the necessary foundations for pursuit of Politics or similar subjects at an undergraduate level.
  • Utilises the expertise of staff in these areas to bring specific insight and development to students understanding.
  • Engages with the contemporary, and adapts to the shifting nature of the subject matter.
  • Combines an array of learning strategies to foster a classroom environment that is inquisitive, open to discussion and debate, and allows students to develop and discover their own positions on an array of subjects.
  • Employs frequent formal and informal feedback to assist students in their academic development.

Through this, students will develop as confident and capable academic writers and speakers, and be well equipped for further academic study at University.
